Dreaming of Roses is a Sleeping Beauty retelling, with a twist! The Princess Esther Rose has been cursed to fall asleep for a hundred years if she pricks her finger on a spinning wheel before her eighteenth birthday, a day that is now fast approaching. To protect her from any possible final tragedies that could occur in the days leading up to her birthday the King and Queen have assigned the Dame Ramona to watch over their beloved daughter.
Esther Rose and Ramona are the main characters of this story, and most of the plot revolves around their developing and constantly changing relationship. Ramona is a reserved rule-follower, and Esther Rose is fun-loving extrovert.
These two are the main sources of magic for this world. There are stories about how the two fairies used to be one being that became so internally divided between the desire to do good and the desire to do evil that they split into two beings, but no one knows for sure. They are also the ones who placed the curse on Esther Rose
Espinoza is comically evil and enjoys being such. She turns people into frogs and birds simply because she is bored and miserable. Oh, is she miserable all the time, and because she's so miserable, she thinks everyone else needs to be to.
Nasrin is much more pleasant, and prides herself very much in being the 'Good Fairy'. She's extremely self-righteous and doesn't really know how to talk to people about negative emotions, much more likely to just distract with new, good things then actually fixing any problems.
The other royals who I don't have much to say about. The King and Queen are loving towards--though a bit over-protective of--Esther Rose and Harvey is the man she eventually marries. He's well-meaning but not all that smart.
As mentioned before, the plot follows Ramona and Esther Rose and how their relationship develops time and time again as Esther Rose is stuck looping the days leading up to her eighteenth birthday.
However, despite the brave knight's efforts to protect the Princess from the wicked fairy Espinoza's tricks, she pricks her finger on a spinning wheel and is sent into a hundred years of sleep. In a century, Esther Rose is wakes up, in an unfamiliar place, with no friends or family to speak of and apparently having been saved by some prince. They get married, have children, and she becomes queen of some foreign kingdom. She's unhappy. If only things had gone differently when she was seventeen. But it's too late for her now.
But is it??? Esther Rose, well into her adulthood is visited by Nasrin the Good Fairy, and given a chance to do it all over. As many chances as she wants, actually. She is to figure out what went wrong and fix it, so that she can have the happy ending that she was promised.
And Esther Rose assumes that the problem must've been that she didn't end up with Ramona, so now, sent back in time, she tries to get the stoic knight to fall for her.
Okay well obviously this is inspired by Sleeping Beauty I don't know what you want from me. I literally just thought "Sleeping beauty would be so much better f it was yuri" and now here we are.
In actual seriousness, the biggest inspirations were the Disney Sleeping Beauty movie from the 50s and Revolutionary Girl Utena (which I haven't finished watching gulp). I think the influences from both of them are pretty clear, I mean...Espinoza is pretty heavily visually inspired by Maleficent and Esther Rose is similar in personality to Aurora...who DOES have a personality contrary to what most people say. Like yes she doesn't have much screen time but she's so silly guys. And obviously the yuri dynamics and time loop thing is inspired by Utena. I need to finish watching that show
However! There are other versions of Sleeping Beauty that have inspired this story!! Like Rotte Reinger's short film and...Hello Kitty Furry Time Theater...as well as many written versions that I can't quite recall off the top of my head as well as that one knight and princess duo in perceforest thats said to be an early version of Sleeping Beauty...
Oh and while it IS inspired by these old versions of Sleeping Beauty, it's much more lighthearted...theres no assault.
This section is also only here because I wanted to yap about Sleeping Beauty.
Anyways, this is the song that you've been listening to while you've hopefully been reading. It's doomed yuri I had to have Good Luck, Babe! going on up in here :-)
