A shrine dedicated to my eternal and undying love for teenage turtles who are mutanted into ninjas.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a franchise about--you'll never guess--mutant turtles who are teenagers and pracice ninjitsu. I love this franchise so much, the good, the bad and the really bad (because lets be honest, most of this stuff is enjoyably bad). The story typically follows Leonardo, Rapheal, Donatello and Michealanglo as they battle the Shredder, the Foot Clan and other villians with their friends April O'Neil and Casey Jones, all while being guided by Master Splinter.
Like any good franchise, TMNT has been rebooted time and time again. Many people like the different versions for various different reasons! My personal favorite is the 2003 cartoon.
The very first version of TMNT was the Mirage Comics, created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The run started in the year 1984 and is characterized by it's classic black-and-white style and edgy writing. These comics are pretty similar to Batman and I've heard that The Foot was meant to be a parody of The Hand from Daredevil and that they're pretty similar, but I've never read Daredevil so I can't attest to that.
Another thing that's interesting about this comic run in particular is that moreso than any other version of this story it gives a very... "we thought this was cool so we did it" vibe, like when Eastman (I think) said he Klunk only exists because his roommate at the time had a cat, which I love.
Made while the Mirage Comics were still ongoing (which is how we got the BEST Mirage arc (Return of the Shredder)) the 1987 cartoon is VERY different from the original comics, but probably the most widely known version of the turtles. As opposed to the dark and gritty nature of the original comics, the cartoon is very silly. The complete opposite end of the spectrum, everything else tends to fall somewhere betwee the goofiness of '87 and the seriousness of the Mirage comics.
This show also carries the vibe of "we thought this was cool so we did it" but it lacks logic, which makes it very fun to watch. Also I feel like all the turtles are very similar in this show, besides Raph. Why does he keep looking into the camera you're NOT REAL.
The run of TMNT Archie Comics ran from '88 to '95. It started off as an adaptation of the '87 show but eventually started doing it's own thing. It's aimed at a younger audience than the Mirage Comics.
UNFORTUNATELY I HAVE NOT READ ANY OF THE ARCHIE COMICS BECAUSE I CAN'T READ THINGS ONLINE AND IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND THEM FOR SOME REASON??? SO I CAN'T SAY MUCH ABOUT THEM. THEY ARE GETTING AN OFFICIAL OMNIBUS SOON THOUGH SO WHEN I BUY AND READ THAT I WILL UPDATE THIS SECTION WITH MY RAMBLINGS
So, I'm a fake fan and have only actually watched the first one of the 90s movie trilogy, which I know is criminal but I'm getting to it I promise. From what I've seen it's kind of similar to the '87 cartoon?? It's more grounded though and thus takes it's self more seriously. Also the Shredder has a goofy costume.
I considered lumping this in with the 90s movies because they're pretty similar in aesthetic at least but like. C'mon. The Next Mutation balls SO HARD and anyone who says otherwise lacks joy and whimsy in their heart. The show is live action and follows not only the fourt turtles, but a new, GIRL turtle named Venus. She's a shinobi (which the show doesn't know is just a ninja and they think it makes her a wizard or something idk) and apparently, totally, definetly NOT related to the boys. They fight various villians, but the main ones are these dragon guys who want to EAT the turtles to gain their powers. I can't believe people hate this show.
YIPPIEE!! YIPPIEEEE!!!! This is my favorite one.
The 2003 Cartoon was on FoxBox/4Kids and is much more similar to the gritty nature of the original Mirage comics, though not as dark and violent. The turtles are much more distinct in this version and the story lines are often very similar to those in the Mirage comics, some episodes being a one-to-one with some comic issues.
This show is so unbelievably peak. The theme song is epic, the characters are epic, the villians are epic. I love everything about it (I do not consider Fast Forward or Back to the Sewer part of this same show). I can't describe all the ways this show is great. I love it so much. If you want to get into TMNT I would reccomend starting here because this show has all the best parts of the franchise in it.
This movie was made as a continuation of the 90s movies, but takes lace several years after when the turtles have all gone their seperate ways, and the story is about them reuniting to defeat an evil, capitalist necromancer. It is a lot less cool than it sounds. It's also CGI animated.
This movie blows. I don't know why people like it so much. I think everyone is nostolgia blind because everytime someone talks about this movie being good they always talk about how epic it was as a kid, but I didn't watch this movie as a kid despite the fact that we had it on DVD. Probably because this movie has one good scene. Oh but making Donnie an IT guy was funny.
The IDW comics is the next run of comics after the Archie comics (well there were Dreamwave Comics but theres not much to say about them since there were only 7 issues) and is still currently ongoing!! I am not caught up at all, but they're really good! They recycle a lot of concepts from old turtles media and try to incorporate literally everything while also adding new stuff! They're lots of fun.
I'm currently on issue #30 but I've seemingly misplaced my books because I can NOT find them and I really don't want to buy them again :-(
2012 was the first show made once Nickelodeon aquired tmnt, it's 3D animated and what most people my age grew up watching, but I didn't have cable so I never saw it until I was much older. Point being that this was many people's introduction to tmnt, and next to 2003 I think this si the second-best show for someone new to the franchise. It's easy to understand, but sometimes the writers (most of which grew up with '87) forget that people may not have heard of some of these characters...
If you ignore the romances, this show is pretty good and I actually like it. Donatello and the whole Leo and Karai thing was just awful though. Not raph and Mona though, they're cute.
The Bayverse movies are the live action movies that came out in the 2010s, nicknamed "Bayverse" since they were directed by Micheal Bay. They have freaky live action turtles, an April thats played by Megan Fox, annnnnnd Casey Jones being.... a cop...? For some reason? I don't know.
I don't really like these movies, and I feel like most other people don't either. They're okay but I'm just not a fan of the turtle designs or their characterization. Except maybe Donnie.
Rise of the TMNT is the cartoon made in 2017 and is tumblr's baby. A lot of people who like Rise are simply fans of animation rather than TMNT and for that reason I would say it's the most controversial in terms of like-"accepted level of quality". This show is much more comedic in tone but still has an over-arching story and the COOLEST animation and character design out of any version. This show is beautiful.
I like Rise a lot, I think it's really good and more people should watch it. It has my FAVORITE version of Splinter and Donnie and maaaaaaaybe April? I'm not sure. But this show is great, people who say otherwise are just haters.
At the time of writing this Mutant Mayhem is the newest installment in the franchise, consisting of the Mutant Mayhem movie itself and Tales of the TMNT. Both of which feature a more distinctly-teenage cast, which brings a lot of accurate characterization to the turtles, who are just dumb teen boys who want to be normal and go to school. Also, April is a teen again. The animation is also WONDERFUL kill that guy in my animation class that said it was ugly.
The movie is really good! I really like all the mutants and the turtles and April. I don't like Splinter though. Sorry. The show is good too, just kind of... mid I feel. It's got that mid-quel deisease since its supposed to take place between the first movie and planned sequel but not be required veiwing. Leo is baby girl in this version though.
Above is a TMNT drug PSA with the world's greatest comeback line, and what you're currently listening to:The TMNT NES Soundtrack! :-)
Leo is typically the leader and eldest brother of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! He's a skilled and disciplined fighter, and he works hard to protect his family and be the best he can be. Leo is usually characterized as being noble, responsible, serious, a stickler for rules, and a bit of dweeb. His role is also usually boiled down to just "leader" but we all know about the crippling inferiority complex that's under that.
Leonardo is my favorite turtle. I love him so much. My favorite versions of him are the 2003 and Rise (even though he's so different) cartoon versions of him because I feel like those are the shows where he has the most depth.
Leonardo is my favorite for multiple reasons. If we want to look at it logically, it makes a lot of sense, since I mainly watch the cartoons which usually give major character development and story lines to our beautiful, blue, boy here, as opposed to the comic runs, which usually focus on Raph. Leo is always taken seriously by the story, and his desire to be a hero and protect his family is not only one that I find very admirable, but also somewhat relatable, as I also have three brothers that I would do anything for.
If were talking emotionally though, I like Leo because he's just a little guy! He's just a little guy. A little baby, who gets thrown through windows all the time. And he's just cute and silly with how he tries to be cool but he's a DWEEB!!! I love him so much in a way that I can't even articulate. YGCUGYEDVFUYDWGOUYGIOUQSKVUXGIUSQHIAIXGIASVUVY
Yes, thats right. Not only is Leonardo ninja turtle a filthy queer he's also in love with none other than Miyamoto Usagi. (I would like to clarify when I talk about these two I mean in reference to the 2003 show, where Usagi is a teenager like the turtles. I am NOT shipping Leo with old man Usagi please don't cancel me). Usagi is a character from Usagi Yojimbo, a comic book series that frequently crosses over with TMNT, and he's usually the closest with Leo out of all the turtles.
Leo and Usagi's relationship all begins in the Battle Nexus, where Usagi saves Leo from being murdered and the two later fight against each other in the competition. They compliment each other's swordsmanship and in general are just happy to have a friend at the Battle Nexus. Usagi appears again when Leo is going through some emotional tourmoil, because his dad was literally like "yo please come to cheer up my son I'm starting to get worried". They spar and have a heart to heart where Usagi tell Leo his traumatic backstory and its SO CUTE ARARARARARARRAGAHARAGGH. The last time Usagi appears is when he and Leo exchange swords for Christmas.
Leo and Usagi is by far the most popular non-canon TMNT ship, and for good reason. The two really understand each other and are both able to just sort of... relax when their with each other, since they both have a lot of responsibilities. Also they're just so silly and BLUE
Donnie is the tech guy, he builds machines and can hack computers and so and such, and he's usually the second youngest next to Mikey. He's very caring for his brothers, always trying to make new machines to help them all on their missions, but is still somewhat snappy, sarcastic and definetly has extreme chaos brewing under the surface. I think he gets baby-ified a lot when actually he's always a gremlin.
My favorite version of Donatello is definetly Rise. I just think he's really funny and I relate to him a lot (insert joke about autism here). I like every version of Donnie pretty much equally though, since I feel like he has pretty consistent characterization, and it's hard to mess up a lovable nerd like him.
Mikey is typically the youngest of the turtles, and plays the role of little brother very well. He's always cracking jokes, messing around and trying to annoy his older siblings, but through these actions he acts as the heart of the team. He loves to make friends and keeps everyone together and having a good time, even when things get tough.
Mikey is probably my second favorite turtle, I think he's sweet and wholesome. It is really easy to make Mikey very annoying though. My favorite Mike is IDW, he's really dedicated to his family and to bringing joy and whimsy to the lives of other people. Also I think it's funny that he can speak Japanese??? Batman Mikey is also awesome, but I don't know if that counts because its not really a main-line thing.
Rapheal is usually the second oldest brother next to Leo, he's serious like him but he's much more impulsive and emotional. Raph is most commonly depicted as having anger issues, but not ever version of him has to have them, because at his core Raph just has to be driven by his emotions and for a desire to protect his family. He's very protective.
My favorite version of Raph is 1987. I like his goofy one-liners and how they made him a sarcastic jerk rather than a rageaholic. I like rageaholic Raph--don't get me wrong--but I also like it when he's silly and breaks the fourth wall. Also '87 Mona Lisa and Raph *awh sound effect*.
Bishop is my favorite non-turtle character, which is why he's before the more relevant characters. At least in the 2003 show, I haven't seen him in the 2012 show and I don't really care that much for her in Tales of teh TMNT. But 03 Bishop is sooooooo funny. He's so edgy, and for what? He thinks he's so cool. He definetly "personally relates" to Shadow the Hedgehog. Bishop is a government agent whose obsessed with finding and iradicating aliens after he was abducted by them once. He's a creature.
April is an ally of the turtles. The depiction of her varies but she's typically older than the turtles and either a scientist or a news reporter. She typically depicted as hard-working and somewhat stubborn. My favorite versions of her are 2003, Rise and Mutant Mayhem. April is also typically paired up romantically with Casey Jones, but occasionally she has romantic subplots with the turtles which... I'm not a fan of. Not because I hate Human x Mutant relationships but just because I don't think April would date a turtle...
Casey is another friend of the turtles. He's usually closest with Rapheal as he's a crime-fighting vigilante. His passion for this varies from someone who is clinically insane or a... cop?? Actually?? Okay. He's pretty funny and I like himn the most in 2003 or the Mirage Comics. I feel like those are the shows he's most prominent in. There's also Cassandra Jones from Rise who I also really like, but she's very different from typical depictions of Casey.
Splinter is the turtle's sensei and father! He's either a mutated rat or a mutated human, but either way he's got personal beef with the Shredder and he trains his sons in the art of ninjitsu. Characterization for Splinter varies greatly, sometimes he's a lazy dad, sometimes he's paranoid and protective and sometimes he's more sensei than father. The best flavor of Splinter is Rise Splinter because they mix things up and I don't know he just feels like the most interesting one.
The Shredder is usually the main antagonist of the turtles! He's the very evil and very cool leader of the Foot Clan. His real name if Oroku Saki and he's got beef with Splinter related to Hamato Yoshi whether Yoshi is Splinter or Splinter's owner. 2003 Shredder is my favorite, Utrom Shredder was just a really cool concept even if killing him kinda gets old after the third time...
Karai is the Shredder's daughter and has a kind of... frenemies(?) type relationship with the turtles. Especially Leo. She's usually adopted but still very loyal to her father, despite the sympathy she might have for the turtles. I like IDW Karai the most, but she's not my favorite character which is sad because I feel like she has a lot of potential to be really interesting??? I don't know. 2012 Karai is pretty cool too but the whole Leo thing is so criminal...
Usagi is actually NOT a tmnt character. He's from his own comic called Usagi Yojimbo, about animals in feudal Japan. Usagi is a ronin and since his creator was friends with the creators of tmnt the two crossover somewhat frequently. He's good friends with Leo, especially in the 2003 show when they aged Usagi down to be the same age as the turtles. Uhhhh they're shippable. Tehe.
I have a lot but I'm still working on uploading it to here so stay tuned I guess.
